Richard B. Hansen
1943-2007
Dick passed away unexpectedly at
Sanford Health Care in Sioux Falls on Saturday, July 21.
Richard B. Hansen was born Sept. 3, 1943, to Richard M. and Joyce (Hegna)
Hansen at Sisseton, S.D. He grew up and attended school in Summit and
graduated from Northern State University with a BS in education.
Dick's passion in life was South Dakota High School basketball. He
followed countless high school players through their careers. Dick could
remember a player's stats 20 years after the game and he never forgot a
name.
In 1977, along with his editor in chief, Dave Anderson, he founded the
Hansen-Anderson Boys' Basketball preview book. Hansen-Anderson
Basketball Camps began in 1979. Dick recruited coaching legend Burnell
Glanzer and countless other coaches to help make his camps a success. In
1991, he started the Hansen-Anderson Girls' Basketball preview book. The
books and camps continued until his untimely death.
Dick enjoyed attending sporting events. He attended the Drake Relays
every year, along with many other national track and field events. From
the age of 10, he attended the SD State Basketball Tournaments every
year.
Other interests he had were fishing, baseball, bicycle riding and
spending countless hours reading sports magazines and books. If it
wasn't basketball season or he wasn't working at his camps or on his
books, Dick could be found at Gene's Conoco in Webster shooting the
breeze with whoever stopped in.
Grateful for having shared his life are his mother of Webster; one
sister, Eloise Hortness of Webster; three nieces: Lori (Ryan) Lahr of
Sioux Falls, Missy Hortness of Webster, and Kelly (Jared Rouge) Hortness
of Tyler, Minn.; and one great-nephew, Jayden Hortness of Webster.
Dick was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.
Dick's life was Hansen-Anderson
Basketball and you were the ones that made his life's dream come true.
Dave Anderson gave a terrific eulogy
and told stories of growing up with Dick. He and Dick have attended the
State Basketball Tournaments together for the last 53 years. Dick called
Dave every morning and after games & track meets with updates. Dave
calculated that he has spent nearly a calendar year on the phone with
Dick.
Dick, through his camps and
publications, has touched the lives of thousands of young players over
the years. Neither Dick nor his contributions to South Dakota basketball
will soon be forgotten.
